Instructional Learning Designer
My name is Melissa Cowan and thank you for visiting my e-portfolio!
I am a creative individual with a passion for art and music. I have over 10 years of experience in instructional design and technology and multimedia development. I enjoy collaborating with others to create engaging learning solutions and I love learning about new and innovative technology. I have a career interest in developing effective and accessible instructional materials for learners with disabilities and neurodivergent individuals.
As an instructional learning designer in academia, I have extensive knowledge with learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard and Canvas) and software applications such as Adobe Captivate and Creative Cloud, Articulate Storyline and Rise 360, Camtasia, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office 365.
In addition to helping faculty with their projects, I am a co-instructor for the fourth year undergraduate medical elective, "MedEd Instructional Materials Development: Moving Beyond PowerPoint." In this four week course, fourth year students progress through the ADDIE model to create an evidence-based medical lesson for their peers.
Some of my recent projects include working with faculty to build virtual escape rooms for medical students and managing and collaborating with faculty, staff, and students to create AR and VR applications for medical education.
Prior to my role at UCF, I worked for Coleman Aerospace as a multimedia specialist, where I provided project support for DoD Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and NASA contracts and maintained the company intranet site. I was also the division's records retention coordinator. While at Coleman, I became Lean Six Sigma, Green Belt trained and certified. I became interested in instructional design and instructor-led training while completing my Green Belt training and certification.
